Resources for those dealing with mental health issues – MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
Without a doubt, the pandemic has worsened many existing mental health issues and spawned others. The increased isolation has been difficult for many, especially youth who are missing out on in-person socializing at school and isolated seniors who have gone without visits from family and friends and regular community gatherings.

While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health.

There is good news, however: recovery is common and help is always available through the Contra Costa Crisis Center, which provides 24-hour access to emotional support and critical resources.

During May, the Crisis Center will be participating in multiple events, including a fundraiser at Milk Tea Lab – Concord (stop in for a boba tea or other snack and proceeds will benefit us!), suicide prevention and intervention training, and more! Please join us at one of these events, or be sure to text us, or call, or search our resource database for tools to help yourself or those you care about who are facing mental health challenges.

The Contra Costa Crisis Center keeps people alive and safe; helps them through crises; provides or connects them with culturally relevant resources; and works with a network of partners to support mental health equity in Contra Costa County.

Mental Health America’s Tools 2 Thrive series provides information, tips, and practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase their resiliency.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month and National Suicide Prevention Week is September 6 – 12, 2020.
While we need to focus on suicide prevention every day of every year, this month can help bring attention to the efforts. And we can do this by continuously spreading awareness, advocating for research funding, developing innovative and effective treatment tools, being kind, and helping to educate others on things like resources and warning signs. It’s time to get involved. Please join our events and help share messages of help and hope in the community.
If you or anyone you know are having thoughts of suicide or need to speak with someone ready to listen, please call 211 or 800.833.2900, or text HOPE to 20121.
